If you're a girl I'd state that's about average but for a boy it's short. I'm 5'8″ and most my friends are at least a few inches taller than me. Closer to 6'. I mean they're not ALL 6' but most people I stand near I do look shorter. I'd say 5'8″ for a guy would be average.
