I want to get a tattoo. how much do they cost on average? nothing large. like a star or a date or a name. something that I have the ability to hide for future reasons.

The more massive the tattoo the more money it is going to cost. I have heard people paying up towards a couple grand for a full sleeve. so for a medium sized it would state $50-$80.
