i am only 14 and my mother said she would take me to get my lip pierced but some places said i have to be 18 even with parental signature, and some said i had to be 16, and some stated i had to be over 12 with a parental siganture, hahaa. does anyone know the real age limit for illinois?
However, most shops prefer not to pierce children and young teens.
Piercers set these age limits to protect growing bodies from piercings that might shift or become a problem as the wearer grows. For example if someone pierced you this day, your mouth is still going to be changing shape and the piercing might end up farther out to the side than you wanted, or otherwise badly put. Your face is no where near its adult shape, so it's going to be difficult to choose a placement that will flatter you when you're grown.
Reputable piercers will usually refuse to pierce anyone under 16. If you've found someone who is going to pierce you under that age, be EXTREMELY cautious. Unfortunately there are piercers out there who will pierce you just to take your money with no concern about your health, safety or your future happiness with your piercing. So stay far away from shady dudes who just want to make 40 bucks.
As a bit of related trivia, the legal age for tattooing in IL is 18. You MUST be 18 to get a tattoo, even with a parent's permission. Tattooing someone under 18 is a felony offense, and if a shop is willing to take that risk you’ve to wonder what other laws they are breaking to make a buck. Do they clean their equipment? Are they reusing needles? That's too scary to risk. So if you visit a shop and notice someone under 18 getting tattooed, or the shop is not SERIOUS about checking your parent's proof that they're really your guardians, run right back out the door.
